History of Saluda Primary School

SPS is housed in the old Saluda Elementary School at 200 Matthews Drive and currently contains 4K thru 2nd grade and preschool disabilities classes.  The building was built in the early 1950s.  In 2001 after the new Saluda Middle/High School complex was built, the 3rd-4th grades moved from the current SPS building over to the old high school (across the street) at 400 W. Butler Ave. and the 5th grade was brought in from the previous middle school (Riverside).  The two campuses were still called Saluda Elementary for two years but were formally separated for the 2003-04 school year thus bringing Saluda Primary into existence.  Weldon Humphreys was the first principal of SPS, retiring in 2004.  Brice Cockfield was principal for 2004-05 and was followed by O. Jay Freeman until his retirement in 2008.  Current principal Corey Burns began his tenure in August 2008.
